IGNITE

IGNITE is a National Sheriffs’ Association program, which stands for Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education. The program offers education, job certification, and post incarceration work opportunities and is funded through a community grant. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was the 25th IGNITE site nationwide.

Students for the program are chosen through a collaboration between the Education Training Coordinator and jail staff. These entities work together to identify those inmates who are best suited for the program. Only non-violent offenders are eligible to participate. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office IGNITE Program is specifically designed to change the culture of incarceration and the stigma associated with being a citizen returning to the community after incarceration. In an effort to accomplish this goal, Sheriff Pettway has entered into partnerships with Lawson State Community College, The Dannon Project, a coalition of faith-based organizations, non-profits, and service agencies providing wraparound support to program participants. These student inmates are given the opportunity to take charge of their future in productive and substantiative ways by providing them with the tools they need to prevent them from becoming repeat offenders in the criminal justice system. Sheriff Pettway said, “when we believe in people and equip them with opportunities, we ignite hope, transform lives, and build safer communities, one second chance at a time.”

IGNITE will further Sheriff Pettway’s vision for his educational programs by reducing recidivism, promoting rehabilitation, and preparing incarcerated individuals for a successful re-entry into society.
